Teeth Whitening – Service With A Smile

Teeth Whitening Bleach
Note the change in the discoloured tooth

The Tooth whitening method used in our Practice is the Opalescence chemically activated bleaching system. The system is approved by the American Dental Association, which is one of the most stringent regulatory bodies governing dentistry in the world. The bleaching agent is Carbamide Peroxide, which has been proven to have no deleterious effect on teeth. There are many light activated Tooth whitening systems that are now being shown to damage teeth. I have chosen to use this system because it is relatively cheap, works well, is good value for money and most importantly, is safe!

Treatment involves constructing a custom-made bleach tray that fits your mouth accurately. Bleaching gel is supplied to you on a take-home basis, so that you can bleach your teeth while you sleep. This can continue until you are satisfied with the results. Usually 3-7 applications produces the desired results, and usually a minimum change of 3 shades lighter can be expected. Bleaching doesn’t last forever, (depending on one’s diet and habits), so the bleach tray can be used to maintain the tooth whitening over an extended period of years. The bleaching gel syringes can be bought from time to time as required.

Filled teeth are a problem, since fillings and crowns do not change shade. Therefore it is usually preferable to obtain the desired colour of teeth by bleaching first, then matching the fillings up to the new colour.

The beauty of Bleaching is that it is a non-invasive, non-traumatic procedure – completely reversible. The alternatives to bleaching are Porcelain Veneers and Crowns, which involve extensive drilling, are expensive and non-reversible. Porcelain work however is permanent, and tooth shape, size and colour can be dramatically changed to produce a “film-star smile”.
